We can at least prove a source, and with a little work \u2014\u00a0and help from HTTPS \u2014 archive that proof for later reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hint: We have <em>never<\/em> known for sure what is true. All we could do was ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What makes sense to me?<\/li><li>Who do I trust?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With convincing fakes, we&#8217;ve lost the second one. That convincing video or news story? It could be from anywhere. We don&#8217;t know who to trust, and we&#8217;re left with &#8220;What makes sense to me?&#8221; \u2014&nbsp;and every one of us has biases about what we <em>wish<\/em> was true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So can we bring back &#8220;Who do I trust?&#8221; Can we prove <em>who said what<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost. On the web as it is today, you can tell <em>in the moment<\/em> whether you can trust content. That&#8217;s what the padlock in the address bar means. But if the page is changed in the future, or becomes inaccessible, you can&#8217;t go back in time and <em>prove<\/em> it to someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we need a little extra software: With those same padlocks, we could download and archive a signed copy of a web page. And the signature would come from the website&#8217;s own HTTPS credentials, so it&#8217;s publicly provable \u2014&nbsp;even if the original page is modified or becomes inaccessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We can&#8217;t detect AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One source we know we can&#8217;t trust is AI. Even its makers warn of its hallucinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, this week OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2023\/07\/openai-discontinues-its-ai-writing-detector-due-to-low-rate-of-accuracy\/\">shut down its AI text detector<\/a> &#8220;due to its low rate of accuracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If OpenAI can&#8217;t tell the difference between human-written and AI-generated text, then I don&#8217;t think anybody can. Images and video can&#8217;t be far behind \u2014 we have to assume that any media we see \u2014 text, audio, image, or video could be <em>entirely synthetic<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a new problem \u2014 that&#8217;s why we have bibliographies after all. But can you check sources? Can you read that article from Reuters, and double check a quote? What if content gets taken down?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know what I think would be a great starting point? If you could save the content of a web page, <em>along with its signature<\/em>. That shouldn&#8217;t be too hard actually, since most web pages are already signed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Signatures Save us?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/c2pa.org\/\">C2PA<\/a> is an emerging standard to add cryptographic signatures to files \u2014 in other words <em>modern bibliographies<\/em>. It is backed by Adobe, BBC, Sony, Intel, Microsoft, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It aims to prove authorship of media, end-to-end, from its initial recording to its latest edits, with cryptographic signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The future of &quot;truth&quot; on the Internet\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-Bdb2KOb_zI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this is important for copyright and ownership \u2014 if AI-generated content <a href=\"https:\/\/www.descript.com\/blog\/article\/what-copyright-law-says-about-ai-generated-content\">can&#8217;t be copyrighted<\/a>, then creators need to be able to prove authorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it can help prove authenticity in critical situations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Provenance and authenticity infrastructure for human rights defenders, civic journalists and others\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/asLdM-1QdX0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course the Internet is full of warnings \u2014&nbsp;dangers to privacy, fears of censorship and tyranny by those who control C2PA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that doesn&#8217;t address the loopholes. For example: <em>Can I record a deepfake with a trusted camera? <\/em>It will be a cat-and-mouse game between the fakers and the provers, and the outcome is not assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who do you trust?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, I don&#8217;t care about the <em>provenance<\/em> as much as about <em>truth<\/em>. And I trust certain sources a lot more than other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if the BBC (or your favorite source) vouched for something? Would it matter if they relied on an AI summary but then fact-checked it? I think that would be fine, because I trust their fact-checking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A secure URL is a good start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems impractical to trace the provenance of every part of that article. Especially the text. Maybe a journalist wrote it, or maybe they re-typed it from ChatGPT? But I don&#8217;t need to know&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;just the fact that it&#8217;s from the BBC is a reputable starting point for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we share URLs. Simple! And HTTPS makes them cryptographically secure. This one testifies that it is hot this summer, and you can <em>really trust<\/em> that it comes from the BBC: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-66343133\">https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-66343133<\/a>. <em>US heatwave: Scorching heat strains US air conditioning capacity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing URLs is great, but it has two problems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Permanence:<\/em> What if the website goes down? Okay, the BBC is unlikely to. But a human rights activist&#8217;s blog post? That could happen.<\/li><li><em>Remix:<\/em> What if I want to share just a piece of it? I can&#8217;t \u2014&nbsp;<em>any change at all<\/em> would violate the digital signature. I would like to take that content as an input into a trusted editing process. C2PA-enabled tools seem like a good start! They would tell the consumer what editing was done.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signed Webpage as Input<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To solve permanence and remix-ability, we could do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Extend HTTPS to support saving signed pages. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/docs\/en\/ibm-mq\/9.1?topic=tls-digital-signatures-in-ssltls\">We already have everything we need, cryptographically<\/a> \u2014 we just need to standardize the protocol. This alone would be useful, as it would allow us to save trustable documents. As long as those <a href=\"https:\/\/csrc.nist.gov\/Projects\/key-management\/key-management-guidelines\">private keys are kept safe<\/a> anyway.<\/li><li>Support this signed content as an input to C2PA-enabled tools. It would provide a means to remix, with a chain of provenance back to trusted sources.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It&#8217;s not perfect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are still some gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What if the BBC retracts the article? Maybe they found a flaw in their fact-checking \u2014 unfortunately that signed copy from yesterday is still circulating.<\/li><li>What if someone ever gets a hold of their private cryptographic key? They could sign fake content, even retroactively.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-black-background-color has-black-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Footnote: We <em>really<\/em> can&#8217;t trust AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This goes almost without saying. <em>Every major AI provider<\/em> makes it very clear that they &#8220;hallucinate&#8221;. And we don&#8217;t know how to fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Will AI Replace Us?
