{"id":134,"date":"2011-03-10T07:56:21","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T12:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/neolefty.org\/wordpress\/?p=134"},"modified":"2016-09-12T03:10:13","modified_gmt":"2016-09-11T19:10:13","slug":"unemployment-and-a-spirit-of-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neolefty.org\/wordpress\/2011\/03\/10\/unemployment-and-a-spirit-of-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Unemployment and a Spirit of Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is still a half-formed thought, and I need some help finishing it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>What is the connection between unemployment, economic productivity, fair distribution of wealth, and a spirit of service?<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking about it for a long, long time, and it&#8217;s still a bunch of ingredients that have yet to form a cohesive stew.  Here are the ingredients; I&#8217;m pretty sure they go together to make something pretty good, but I&#8217;m not sure what it is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A spirit of service:<\/strong> being genuinely thrilled to do something useful to your fellow human beings&#8212;for example, as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bah\u00e1'\u00ed_Faith#Summary\">Shoghi Effendi writes<\/a>, <i>&#8220;&#8230; the exaltation of work, performed in the spirit of service, to the rank of worship.&#8221;<\/i>  Whether it&#8217;s for pay (for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/google.com\/\">organizing the world&#8217;s information<\/a>) or an act of charity (for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/khanacademy.org\/\">teaching almost everything<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technology keeps making life easier:<\/strong> Fewer people are needed to see to everyone&#8217;s basic needs, which makes things cheaper but is also creating unemployment and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/print\/magazine\/content\/07_52\/b4064058743638.htm\">the failure &#8230; of society itself to harness the energy, intelligence, and enthusiasm of the next generation.<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fair distribution of resources:<\/strong> elimination of extremes of wealth and poverty.  This doesn&#8217;t mean elimination of variation, but rather, if there is extreme wealth somewhere, ensuring that other people don&#8217;t have to grind away their lives in poverty. Further, that people should <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.cc\/psalms\/128-2.htm\">eat the fruit of their labor<\/a>&#8212; and not see it <i>all<\/i> go to the man.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I can think of a few implications, but does anyone know of examples of these principles put into practice?  What kind of society can we build after they stew for a while?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If life is easy, what will motivate you to do difficult things?  A spirit of service?<\/li>\n<li>Can you truly be unemployed if you are looking for ways to be of service (and not desperately poor)?<\/li>\n<li>What proportion of people take advantage of the system?<\/li>\n<li>Where can innovation come from, if everyone has access to information, reasonable resources, and if we celebrate service?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is still a half-formed thought, and I need some help finishing it: What is the connection between unemployment, economic productivity, fair distribution of wealth, and a spirit of service?
